From the 305 to the 202: Celebrating Miami in the nation’s capital (includes video story)

There were palm trees, sandy beaches, and a whole lot of Panther pride. It wasn’t the 305, but the 202 at Florida International University’s headquarters not far from Capitol Hill. At a presentation/reception, FIU brought a taste of Miami to the nation’s capital for 305 Day Wednesday night. The event celebrated the city’s culture, innovation, and resilience. The event also marked the culmination of FIU Give Day, rallying alumni and supporters to fund scholarships and research opportunities.

Beyond the celebrations, the night featured a panel with experts from FIU’s Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab, 1Print, and eMerge Americas, highlighting cutting-edge research in marine robotics, hybrid seawalls, and 3D-printed construction. The panel focused on how FIU is a leader shaping climate resilience and leveraging federal funding to drive technological advancements.

FIU’s presence didn’t just stay at the event—alumni and faculty took to Capitol Hill, where they met with lawmakers to showcase the university’s growing impact.

“What makes me really proud is that when we were on the Hill earlier today and we spoke with these amazing elected officials, is that everyone knows FIU,” said Sean Gazitua, President of the Alumni Board of Directors. “Everyone loves FIU and not only that but they love the talent that is coming out of  FIU.”

With over $80,000 raised and counting, 305 Day proved that Panther pride runs deep.

“I think (305 day) is all about bringing our community together,” said Chief Alumni Officer Sara DuCuennois. “And also celebrating our shared commitment to making our community and our world a better place.”
