Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management hosted its second Adopt-a-Tree event of the year on July 25 at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.
More than 2,500 free trees were distributed to eligible homeowners, while partner organizations provided tips on proper planting and tree care.
The Adopt-a-Tree program, which has been serving residents for 25 years, allows single-family and duplex homeowners to receive up to two free trees each year. Since its launch in 2001, the county has distributed more than 250,000 trees to help expand Miami-Dade’s urban tree canopy.
“Adopt‑a‑Tree is one of Miami‑Dade County’s top efforts to expand our tree canopy to 30 percent,” said Loren Parra, Chief Resilience Officer and DERM Director.
To participate, attendees are required to pre-register online via the Miami-Dade Adopt-a-Tree site and bring their property ID or bill of sale to claim your trees in person on a first-come, first-served basis.
FIU’s event marks the second event of the season; the county typically holds multiple event dates each year across different local campuses and parks.
“I encourage all homeowners—especially in the northern neighborhoods of Miami-Dade—to take part in this free Adopt-a-Tree program,” said Miami-Dade County District 2 Commissioner Marleine Bastien. “Growing our tree canopy is one of the most effective ways to cool down our communities, giving nature the chance to lower the temperature and bring much-needed relief during our hottest months.”
The final Adopt-a-Tree event of the season is scheduled for Sept. 13 at Zoo Miami.
