FIU students join AI+ Expo amid urgent calls for AI policy reform (includes video story)

Students from Florida International University joined researchers, innovators and policymakers at this year’s AI+ Expo to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping everyday life and to ensure their voices are part of the conversation. The three-day event, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, highlighted cutting-edge advancements and the growing need for updated AI policy in the U.S.

FIU students showcased work for the university’s AI and data science programs, including projects in marine robotics.

“Students should be an equal part of this conversation of how these technologies are going to impact everyone’s lives,” said FIU student Acher Armon.

However, amid rapid innovation, concerns arose about the government’s ability to keep pace. Advocates warned that outdated policies from the 1980s are ill-equipped to regulate today’s AI landscape.

“We’re now having technology that exponentially, as it advances, advances quicker each time,” said Rachel Golberg, an exhibitor for Girl Security. “And a policy process that cannot keep up with it.”
