The Alpha Alumnae Florida chapter hosted “Artful Aromas: Coffee and Art” fundraiser event on Oct. 11 at Island Space Caribbean Museum in Plantation to raise money for students at the Convent of Mercy Academy.
Proceeds from the event support scholarships, resources, and photography and digital media programs at the all-girls high school, which serves low-income families. The school has locations in Kingston, Jamaica, and Fort Lauderdale.
Alpha Alumnae Board Members and former students of St. George’s College, the academy’s brother school, attended to help fund the event.
“There are many different ways in which we support the girls,” said Dr. Laura Borland, Alpha Alumnae Board Member. “But we want to make sure that their base needs-our little sisters-that they get all the resources that they need.”
Guest speaker and attorney Kaysia Earley, who has handled both civil and criminal cases and served over 300 criminal case dismissals, spoke about education and youth justice.
“If you don’t have the proper education, the student gets frustrated and they tend to act out physically, which will result in criminal charges,” Earley explains. There are programs, counseling sessions, and mentorship within the school to help meet those needs. But, if the student doesn’t know about it, they’re not going to benefit from those programs.”
