While the National Cherry Blossom Festival draws crowds in the thousands every year, one tradition keeps the community together.
The Annual Student Art Showcase connects eight schools from different areas in Washington, D.C., to local artists to create a series of murals, exposing students to the history and significance of the festival.
Artist Dietrich Williams believes the most important part of the program is the student engagement.
“I know that sounds very generic to say: ‘Painting with the kids,’” said Williams. “But after we get all of the linework and drawing done, then we can get to the painting, so I guess the painting’s the most fun part for myself.”
