Arcade Odyssey, a staple in the Kendall community, turns 13 (includes video story)

Arcade Odyssey has been a cornerstone of the Kendall community for more than a decade. Since opening in 2011, owner Rick Medina has worked to recreate the social magic of classic arcades, where friends gather to compete and connect.

But keeping the business running in today’s economy has proven challenging. Rising rents, insurance costs and taxes in Miami make it increasingly difficult to sustain operations. Increasing expenses have already forced the closure of local businesses like Mojo Donuts.

Despite these hurdles, Medina’s passion shines through as he keeps Arcade Odyssey alive. The arcade remains a retro escape in a rapidly changing city, with Medina committed to fostering community through gaming.

“Even if you get [Arcade Odyssey] to hold itself together, it is a nice feeling to know that you built this or you created this.” Medina says.
