Art Deco weekend returns for its 46th year (includes video story)

This past weekend, 150,000 people visited the 46th annual Art Deco Weekend on Ocean Drive. There were tours, food trucks, pop-up shops, exhibitions, live music and even pet adoptions.

“Art Deco brings together many artsy people… and I think it’s a beautiful atmosphere,” said Simone Buergel, owner of UNIQ Jewelry, who had a pop-up during the weekend.

The Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) established Art Deco Weekend long ago to highlight South Beach’s stunning architecture and style.

After World War II, Miami’s structures started to lose favor, giving way to the more recent MiMo (Miami Modern) Architecture Movement.

The early efforts of the MDPL served as the foundation for the development of the modern, thriving South Beach.

If you missed this year’s Art Deco weekend, remember this three-day event celebrating architecture comes around every year in early January. More information is available on their website, artdecoweekend.org.
