The Center for Strategic & International Studies held a panel on the growing role of artificial intelligence in cyber defense and what it means for people around the world.
As AI continues to evolve, so do concerns about national security, critical infrastructure and cybersecurity. While many people have embraced the technology for the convenience it brings to everyday life, cyber defense experts said it’s just as important to remain vigilant.
“We have to be using our critical thinking skills and recognizing patterns in the models generated, which can be hallucinated and might include information that isn’t actually real or may have been made up,” said Lauryn Williams, deputy director and senior fellow at CSIS.
The discussion brought together experts and policymakers to examine both the opportunities and risks of AI. As the technology becomes more integrated into everyday life and cyber operations, they said governments and individuals alike must be prepared for emerging cyber threats.
“Like it or not, it’s not going to go away,” said attendee Anusha Chowdhuri, who is entering the field of international relations. “In fact, it’s going to rapidly change basically everything we do in our lives.”
Panelists said understanding both the benefits and risks of AI will be key to using the technology safely and responsibly as it continues to shape the future.
