As king tide season begins, sea-level rise poses a serious threat

King tide season is ahead. From late April to the end of July, South Florida will experience sea-level rise close-up.

Florida International University’s Jayantha Obeysekera, director of the Sea Level Solutions Center, said that king tides usually bring high water levels, and individuals living in a flood zone may be affected.

The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact states that by the year 2040, the sea could rise 10 to 17 inches. If there is an increase of ice melting, the sea could rise by 21 to 40 inches by the year 2070.
