Birthright citizenship on trial at Supreme Court (includes video story)

On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments over the constitutional right of birthright citizenship.

In one of the most significant cases of the decade, the justices expressed skepticism over an executive order issued by President Donald Trump that sought to end automatic citizenship for U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants. For more than a century, previous justices interpreted the 14th Amendment as guaranteeing citizenship to nearly all individuals born on U.S. soil.

Trump attended the arguments for about 90 minutes — the first sitting president to do so. He argued that the constitutional provision is outdated and has been widely abused.

A decision from the high court is expected during the summer.
