From neighbors to saviors: A Broward County’s pet rescue legacy (includes audio story)

Kacy Eisenman, 44, has been rescuing, volunteering, fundraising and fostering animals of all shapes and sizes for over 16 years at Saving Grace and Her Furry Friends. With each year that passes, her dedication to advocacy grows.

It wasn’t long after she started that her family and close friends began to join her, illustrating unconditional love for neglected and abused animals. This mirrors the ideals of the founder, Stefanie Minguell, who took a leap of faith when she initially rescued a dog named Grace and her nine newborn puppies from a kill animal shelter — thus was born Saving Grace and Her Furry Friends.

Since its inception, Minguell and her volunteers have saved and rescued hundreds of pets throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. However, before its many volunteers, official 501c–3 non-profit license and veterinarian – Eisenman and Minguell were simply neighbors. They quickly cemented their relationship over their love of pets and the rest is history. Currently, the rescue doesn’t have a location. Instead, they opt for the pet to be fostered in the volunteer’s home until their potential parent has been officially screened. Eisenman smiles, wistfully, and shares her thoughts.

“It’s tough… It’s rewarding, though, to see them go from very sick to very healthy.”

They always ensure a pet is fully recovered from their medical or other ailments before releasing them to prospective parents. This ensures a high retention for the fosters. Although they struggle with funding, the volunteers and founder utilize all their resources to ensure each pet is in a caring home. It is clear from their results so far that they will stop at nothing and overcome everything to achieve it.
