Bryan Kohberger, the man convicted of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing took place in the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho, where people camped overnight to secure a seat in the courtroom.
Kohberger, a former criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, pleaded guilty earlier this month to four counts of murder and one count of burglary. The plea deal removed the death penalty, bringing mixed reactions from the victims family and community.
Inside the courtroom, family members of the victims—Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves—delivered emotional statements that reflected a range of grief and response. Some relatives chose to express forgiveness, while others made it clear that the pain of the loss was still unbearable. Kohberger did not speak during the hearing and showed no visible emotion as each statement was read aloud.
Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson addressed the public following the sentencing.
“We have finality and conclusion, not just for the families but for everyone who suffered because of this,” said Thompson.
Though the motive remains unclear and the murder weapon was never recovered, prosecutors believe this resolution offers families some peace.
