Bryan Kohberger pleads guilty in the University of Idaho murders (includes video story)

Bryan Kohberger, the former criminology Ph.D. student accused of killing four University of Idaho students in November 2022, stunned the nation this week by pleading guilty to the brutal murders. His surprise plea came just one month before his highly anticipated trial was set to begin, marking an unexpected turn in a case that has gripped the country for nearly three years.

Kohberger also admitted to a burglary charge related to the attack.

The plea deal allowed Kohberger to avoid the death penalty, a decision that has deeply angered the victims’ families and left many questions unanswered. In exchange for his guilty plea, Kohberger was immediately sentenced to four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 10 years for burglary.

Families of the victims, including the Goncalves family, expressed outrage over the outcome, arguing that it denies them the chance to hear critical details during a public trial.

“You don’t deal with terrorists, and you don’t deal with people who kill your kids in their sleep,” said Steve Goncalves, father of 21-year-old Kaylee Goncalves. “So we’ll never see this as justice.”

Nearly three years after the murders, the case continues to stir emotion and raise questions not just in Idaho, but across the country. While the courtroom chapter has now officially closed, families and the community are left searching for answers about why the attack happened and what more Kohberger knows about that night.
