New platform helps users protect personal information (includes video story)

People’s personal information often circulates through online data broker networks. Now, concerns over data privacy are growing

In response, California launched a new statewide tool several years ago that allows residents to request the deletion of their personal data with a single submission.

The Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform, known as DROP, was created under the California Delete Act of 2023. The law authorizes the California Privacy Protection Agency to operate a portal that connects consumers directly to registered data brokers.

Harry Morgan, a data broker, said, “Usually such ionformation is for commercial purposes, but often it falls into the wrong hands and you have somebody who is trying to extort or scam somebody.”

The system became fully operational in 2026: The mandate increases transparency on data practices like registration and fees, which add to CCPA rights.

The portal highlights how personal data is bought and sold online, encouraging users to limit what they share. Californians can submit deletion requests directly through DROP. Residents in other states such as Florida must contact data brokers individually or use third-party services to request removal and should prioritize using a privacy browsers.
