Beyond the Parade: Miami Carnival’s connection to South Florida (includes audio story)

“Beyond the Parade” is a podcast series that speaks to those that are connected to Miami Carnival, which took place earlier this month and will return next October. This podcast is meant to give listeners a look into how an event centered around celebrating Caribbean culture has been used for creative self-expression, confidence and bringing people together.

Episode 1: David I. Muir

In this episode of “Beyond the Parade” we speak to David I. Muir, a celebrated photographer, entrepreneur and community leader whose work captures the essence of Caribbean culture. Muir, the author of “Pieces of Jamaica” and co-founder of Island Syndicate, has spent over three decades documenting the beauty, spirit and resilience of the Caribbean through his lens. 

The conversation explores how photography can serve as activism and cultural preservation, the deeper meaning of Carnival as storytelling and Muir’s lifelong mission to honor his heritage through art.

Episode 2: Milagros “Millie” Rivera

In this episode of “Beyond the Parade” we speak to Millagros Rivera, the mother of costume designer Lila Nikole, who is known for her work in Miami Carnival, Super Bowl LV halftime show and Swim Miami. The conversation explores how a mother has seen her daughter’s work grow through the years and the time it takes to break out into the fashion industry.
