Florida middle schooler Cash Owens, 12, from Trenton Middle High School, is turning his hard work into hope for his family after a devastating house fire.
The fire, caused by an electrical issue on March 1, destroyed their home completely. Cash, who was home alone when the fire broke out, quickly called 911 and acted bravely in the face of danger.
Following the tragedy, Cash chose to donate all the proceeds from the sale of his hog, Babe, to support his family and raised more than $6,000.
Babe, weighing in at 245 lbs., was sold for over $25 per pound. With the hog, Cash won first place in his class and third in his division at the competition. This was his first-ever project, and raising Babe had its challenges, as he had to carefully manage her weight gain.
Despite the difficulties, he remained determined to help his family.
“It makes me feel good that I can benefit my family and not just sit down,” said Cash. “I just want to help.”
Cash’s mother, a single parent of three, is deeply grateful for the support as the family slowly recovers from the fire. Those close to the family say that the middle schooler’s actions reflect his remarkable character, particularly given that he was raised by a single mother, and have left a strong impression on his community.
