On Jan. 29, FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management hosted a “Cultural Competency Workshop. It was sponsored by Encore in partnership with Seva Global.
Held at the Biscayne Bay Campus, the event was designed to help hospitality students better understand cultural traditions, client expectations, and inclusive practices that are essential in today’s diverse event and tourism landscape.
Throughout the day, students participated in engaging and interactive sessions such as India 101 & Indian Weddings, Judaism 101 & Jewish Social Events, and LGBTQ+ 101 & LGBTQ+ Weddings. The workshop also featured hands-on activities, including learning traditional Indian dance and wedding dances, creative play-doh sessions, and relaxing chai tea breaks.
The workshop left a strong impression on attendees, emphasizing the importance of honesty, communication, and cultural awareness in hospitality.
“One thing I learned today that I’ll carry into my future is the transparency that you have with the client,” said Dalys, a junior in hospitality at FIU.
