FIU plans a vigil tonight following the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and arrest of his alleged killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.
The arrest followed an alleged confession: “A family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied he committed the incident,” said Utah Gov. Spencver Cox.
At Friday’s press conference, FBI Director Kash Patel noted that forensic evidence is being processed as part of the investigation.
Authorities recovered a bolt-action rifle and shell casings engraved with phrases like “Hey fascist! Catch!” Investigators also obtained Discord messages from Robinson’s roommate showing he had discussed retrieving a rifle.
Authorities believe Robinson acted alone. Gov. Cox condemned the attack as “an assault on American ideals,” calling it a potential “watershed moment” in U.S. history.
Robinson could face multiple initial charges, including aggravated murder, though he has not yet been formally indicted.
Democratic and Republican politicians alike condemned Kirk’s murder and have drawn swift emotional responses.
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called the assassination “tremendously disturbing” and urged that gun safety laws be passed by Congress.
“The assassination of Charlie Kirk risks an uncorking of political chaos and violence that we cannot risk in America,” she said.
President Donald Trump praised Kirk’s work, said he will seek to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, and plans to attend his funeral in Arizona.
Across the country, students and supporters of Kirk are organizing memorials.
At Florida International University, the Turning Point USA chapter is hosting a vigil today at 6 p.m. to honor Kirk’s legacy and give students a space to grieve. Dozens gathered to memorialize Kirk on campus last Friday.
Organizers say tonight’s event is meant to celebrate his role in energizing young conservatives and to show solidarity with his family. In the wake of this incident, policymakers are discussing increased security measures for politicians and public events.
The attack that claimed Charlie Kirk’s life has become a moment of national reckoning over political violence, free speech and public safety. With an arrest now made, many are hoping for swift legal closure and perhaps a broader conversation about what led to this tragedy.
