As the city of Coral Gables celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, the Merrick House has become an important symbol and reminder of where the city began. The house was built before the city was officially founded and served as the childhood home of George Merrick, Coral Gables’ founder.
Althea Merrick, George’s mother, designed the house, which is located at 907 Coral Way. It was inspired by her New England roots, explaining why it stands in contrast to the Mediterranean-style city George envisioned. Still, it was in this home where much of the early vision for Coral Gables was formed.
“The house was here before the city was,” says Gay Bondurant, docent coordinator for the City of Coral Gables Historical Resources and Cultural Arts Department. “It was finished in 1910, and the city grew up around it.”
This historic residence continues to play a key role in honoring the city’s past, especially during its 100th anniversary. The Merrick House has hosted events like the “100 voices” series, where longtime residents shared their memories of Coral Gables.
“People who lived around in Coral Gables back in the day and had businesses here [brought] some interesting stories about growing up here and working here,” explained Bondurant.
