City of Miami mayoral candidates face off in heated debate at the Hyatt Regency (includes video story)

Six of the City of Miami’s 13 mayoral candidates faced off in a heated debate Tuesday evening at the Hyatt Regency hotel hosted by Downtown Neighbors Alliance and CBS News. The organization limited the stage to candidates polling above 5%.

This included former mayors Joe Carollo and Xavier Suarez, former City Commissioner Ken Russell and Alex Diaz de la Portilla, County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, and former City Manager Emilio Gonzalez, who took the stage to answer pressing questions from Miami residents about local government.

CBS anchor and debate moderator Elliot Rodriguez asked candidates on the housing and homelessness crisis, traffic, environmental and flooding hazards and corruption.

Local activist and journalist of the podcast show “Because Miami,” Billy Corben, spoke out against one of Joe Carollo’s answers in which he felt was unjust.

“The irony and hypocrisy of Joe Carollo to attack someone for how their attorney’s fees are being paid when everybody in this room pays a corruption tax, to pay his attorneys fees,” said Corben.

The election will be held November 4th.
