Lawmakers and journalists took the field at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., for the 17th annual Congressional Women’s Softball Game, a bipartisan event raising awareness and funds for breast cancer support.
The game brought together members of Congress and reporters from major outlets, including USA Today and NBC News, for a lighthearted event. Founded in 2009, the tradition fosters unity and community through sport, with each player taking the field in honor of a specific cancer survivor.
“Pretty interesting game to see members of Congress go up to members of the press literally and figuratively, which we often see on the Hill every day,” said Sasha Galbreath, game attendee and deputy chief of staff for the U.S. House of Representatives.
The game benefits the Young Survival Coalition, a nonprofit organization that supports young adults diagnosed with breast cancer by providing resources, mental health services and advocacy. To date, the event has raised more than $4.3 million and has become a meaningful platform for highlighting the challenges and needs of young breast cancer patients.
Although the match was cut short due to severe weather, the Congressional team was declared the winner, leading 2–1 at the time of cancellation. Despite the abrupt ending, attendees and participants emphasized that the true victory was in raising awareness and support for a critical cause.
