Coronavirus update: free face masks and hot meals, more projected deaths

Today is Wednesday, May 6 and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington built a coronavirus model that had projected COVID-19 related deaths would halt by the summer. Now that’s changed. Researchers at the IHME adjusted their methodologies to account for states that have eased restrictions. The model now projects more than 134,000 people will die from COVID-19 by August.

Food donations will take place today at the Inter Miami CF stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The stadium will serve as a weekly donation site run by the county in collaboration with DeliverLean and the Urban League. Food distribution will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue as long as supplies last. The stadium is located at 1350 NW 55th St, Fort Lauderdale.

A blood drive will take place today at John F. Kennedy Library, 190 West 49th St. in Hialeah. It will be sponsored by Innovative Transfusion Medicine. The first 100 people to donate will receive free hot meals and face masks. The blood drive will run from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Library books, DVDs and other materials can now be preordered online. This will be followed by a notification to pick them up via walk-up door service. The Miami Dade Public Library system announced that this service is now available in the county’s libraries. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
