Cuban culture takes center stage at the Arsht Center (includes video story)

The Adrienne Arsht Center presents “Buena Vista Social Club” Sept. 29-Oct. 4 as part of a weeklong celebration of Cuban heritage and culture.

The musical tells the story of four Cuban musicians in 1950 who were brought together by the rhythm of authentic Cuban music. After being separated by growing tensions in a pre-revolutionary Cuba, they were brought back together in 1997 when a record producer wanted to revisit the magical sound.

Jaleel Battles Jr., who plays a young Ibrahim, draws on his African American heritage to connect with the cultural experiences portrayed in “Buena Vista Social Club.”

“I truly do believe that we are more alike than we are different,” says Battles Jr. “I resonate … through this Cuban story. I know a lot of African Americans have been through [similar experiences]. So, I channel that energy … to then tell these beautiful stories.”

The center sets the ambiance before the show with Rhythm & Roots, a free-for-all experience where guests can wander through Cuban history, live music, domino games and pop-up vendors.

Tickets range from $58.50 to $228.15, including fees.
