Culture Shock Miami delivers reasonably priced arts tickets to students

Culture Shock Miami provides $5 tickets to cultural events for teens and young adults ages 13 to 22. The goal is to attract a younger demographic to the arts community, which is otherwise seen as an “older and more affluent” community, according to program manager Christina Beauvoir.

The program, a partnership between Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and local arts organizations, also offers a second $5 ticket to companions.

“In the past, a lot of the barriers had to do with transportation or not being able to get to the show,” said program coordinator Melanie Rodriguez.

Culture Shock Miami includes a student council, in which students help coordinators with marketing and outreach efforts.

The council members set up a tent at the Miami-Dade County Book Fair last month to spread the word about the program. It directed visitors to the website where people can find arts events and buy tickets.
