Over the Fourth of July holiday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser joined public safety officials at a press conference in Washington, to outline safety plans for one of the busiest weekends of the year.
Thousands of residents and visitors were expected to attend celebrations across the District over the holiday weekend. The events included America 250 celebrations, Fourth of July festivities, the Palisades Parade, the Great American State Fair and other community gatherings. Officials prepared for increased traffic, transit changes, road closures and heightened public safety measures.
Throughout the briefing, leaders emphasized that public safety is a shared responsibility.
First District Commander Colin Hall encouraged the public to remain vigilant.
“The community really [is] the biggest allies in these things,” said Hall. “All these people help [be] our eyes and ears.”
Mayor Bowser and transportation officials highlighted the best travel options, reviewed road closures, prohibited items and encouraged attendees to stay hydrated as extreme heat affected the region.
As the holiday weekend concluded with parades, fireworks and community celebrations, officials said the planning and cooperation between agencies and the public helped create a safe environment for families to celebrate together.
