A beloved ocean-themed mural in downtown Dallas — one of the last remaining “Whaling Walls” painted by renowned environmental artist Robert Wyland — has been painted over as Dallas prepares for promotional efforts tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The massive eight-story artwork had stood for more than 20 years, becoming a recognizable landmark for locals, office workers and visitors alike. Its vibrant depiction of marine life served as both a public art piece and a reminder of ocean conservation.
Many residents expressed disappointment after seeing the mural replaced by a plain blue wall, saying the artwork brought character and identity to downtown Dallas. The removal has sparked conversations about balancing global event marketing with preserving local culture and public art.
“You gotta paint over mine? I’m not going to take it laying down,” said artist Wyland. “There was no way they were so far along in painting it out that it wouldn’t be possible to save it.”
