Where purpose meets passion: DJ M. Dot’s impact on Miami

Before the Miami Heat storms the court, before the first three-pointer is dropped or the first dunk brings fans to their feet, one man is already moving the crowd. His stage might be tucked behind a DJ booth at the Kaseya Center, but make no mistake, DJ M Dot is the energy, the rhythm keeper, and a part of the master plan to keep Heat culture alive every game.

One of the few official DJs in the NBA, M Dot (real name Michael Hankerson) actually doubles as an in-arena host. It is not just his playlist that makes him stand out, he controls the atmosphere of a building filled with thousands of fans from all over the world.

Somehow, he always delivers, and it seems he always knows how to play the right thing at the right time.

“I’m not just playing songs, I’m reading the room, feeding off the energy from the crowd and reacting in real time,” he says. “It’s an adrenaline rush. I live for moments like this. I like to call it moving the masses.”

This may seem easier said than done, but he says he had the best mentor in DJ Irie. The legendary DJ, who worked  with the Heat from 1999- 2020  taught Hankerson a lot in two decades.

Irie transformed the game day experience, which is crucial for sports fanatics, but even more so for those who are not die-hard fans. Game day isn’t just about the game, it’s an experience and people pay top dollar for it. In fact, the highest-price ticket sold for a Heat game was paid in 2013. One seat vs. the Los Angeles Lakers went for $1.1 million.

As the NBA’s first official DJ, Irie set the standard for how music and sports collide. His work earned him partnerships with major brands like Pepsi, Nike, and Carnival, and he has spun for stars like Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise.

In 2016, Irie was named Global Ambassador of the Year by the NBA, and he has been a fixture at events like the Super Bowl, All-Star Weekend, and Art Basel. As the original sound architect for the Heat, Irie earned the trust of many people over 25 years.

“Irie didn’t just open doors for me, he taught me how to move in those rooms once I entered them,” said DJ M. Dot.

DJ M. Dot worked for 12 seasons as DJ Irie’s assistant. He moved into the Miami Heat’s main in-arena DJ position in 2020, and as of  December 2025, he is still in that role, having served as the main in-arena DJ and one of three hosts.

“He showed me that if you really love what you do, your city will feel it,” said DJ M. Dot. “I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since, which is a big part of why I would never turn my back on FIU,”

While many would use a role like this as a stepping stone to something else, DJ M. Dot has done the opposite. He has stayed rooted at Florida International University, where he has been the sound of FIU football and men’s basketball for over a decade. He does not treat it like a side gig or a lower-tier commitment.

“Oftentimes, M. Dot would show up to our games on a Saturday, and I’d say to him, ‘Don’t you have a Miami HEAT game in a few hours?’  said FIU Director of Fan Experience Scott Yogodzinski. “He’d always respond, ‘I always support the people that show love to me.’ He’s real, loyal, and always shows up for our growing fan base,”

He treats FIU with the same respect as an NBA game. Because of him, FIU is more than just where he started. It is where he grew. It is where he belongs. He gained big-time experience engaging fans, leading promotions, and energizing the crowd with live music.

“FIU didn’t just give me a mic and a laptop. They gave me the freedom and creativity to be myself and that’s what I love most. That kind of trust and appreciation doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s like family here. You don’t leave when things get difficult, you double down,” he says.

M. Dot still makes time to show up for his Panthers, and not because it looks good or feels comfortable. It is because he genuinely believes in giving back to the place that raised him. The nostalgia of a college crowd, the passion of the student section, but more so the rawness of FIU game days.

“He thrives in those moments,” said FIU Marketing Director Scott Yodgezenski, who hired DJ M. Dot. “He doesn’t need the glitz to perform. He just needs people who are ready to feel something.”

Beyond the arenas and the turntables, DJ M. Dot’s heart lives in his foundation. Built on service, empowerment and community, his foundation creates real opportunities for young people and families throughout South Florida. It stands for purpose, people and possibility. His legacy is defined not only by the crowds he moves but also by the lives he impacts.

Through his foundation, DJ M. Dot invests directly in the next generation. The organization hosts youth mentorship programs, back to school drives, holiday toy giveaways and community workshops that focus on music education and entrepreneurship skills. He uses his platform to create safe spaces where kids can dream bigger, learn from real role models and feel seen. Whether he is providing resources, visiting local schools or partnering with community leaders, his foundation is built on one mission: to uplift the people who need it most.

Outside of the limelight, DJ M. Dot is a father to a seven-year-old girl whom he refers to as “his entire world.” Everything changes, and the DJ persona disappears, when he talks about her. He embraces his softness as a father who is aware he is carrying more than just his own aspirations. He is writing a legacy for “his baby girl,” who is sometimes seen at work with him.

“She’s the reason I keep pushing. I want her to look back and say, ‘My dad didn’t quit. My dad showed up. But most importantly, my dad was a man of the people.”

But for him,, every crowd is an opportunity to create something memorable and use music to make people feel alive.

“As long as I’ve got breath in my body, I’m going to keep showing up.”

No matter the stage, he leads with heart.

“I want to make sure I do my part in making the in-game experience a memorable one for everyone in attendance,: ,” he said. “Whether it’s playing a song you haven’t heard in a while, hosting a fun contest, or bringing the hype on the microphone. I want you to go home saying you had a good time and look forward to coming back.”
