Dominican Republic trade show brings tourism industry to South Florida (includes video story)

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism hosted their fourth annual Trade Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Friday.

The event brought together more than 1,200 travel industry professionals from the United States, Canada and Latin America, with representation from more than 25 U.S. states. The Americas remain the Dominican Republic’s primary source market, accounting for more than 7.4 million visitors.

The Caribbean country is one of the top tourism destinations in the world. Tourism Minister David Collado stated the event concluded with more than 15 agreements with airlines, travel agencies, cruise operators and other industry partners.

“We are going to all the trade fairs with the tourism minister, with the tourism board, which do great events like this one here,” said Phil Wilkes, the commercial director at Adventure Boogies Group, which runs ATV and buggy tours in Punta Cana.

The event also highlighted the destination’s cultural identity. Attendees participated in 30 cultural sessions, including workshops on traditional faceless dolls, tastings of mamajuana, demonstrations of cassava bread and organic cocoa production, as well as live performances of merengue and bachata.
