Safe Stages: A Miami Drag Story is a two-part podcast series that explores Miami’s drag scene as both an art form and a movement to increase visibility. The series takes listeners inside South Florida’s queer performance culture, revealing how drag has become a source of empowerment and activism for the local LGBTQ+ community.
As political tensions surrounding drag and queer representation rise nationwide, Florida has become a focal point for legislation aimed at restricting drag performances. Beyond the legal battles, drag performers continue to face cultural and social pushback, both online and in public spaces. “Safe Stages” documents how Miami’s drag community responds to these pressures, transforming performance into resistance, and stages into safe spaces for queer art and self-expression.
Episode 1: Bonnie Builder
In the first episode, Miami-based performer Bonnie Builder reflects on her personal journey, building community and advocating for inclusion. Her story highlights how performance can become a platform for connection, education and resilience within the queer community.
Episode 2: Karla Croqueta
The second episode features Karla Croqueta, a drag host and show coordinator at Gramps Wynwood, one of Miami’s most recognized venues. As Gramps prepares to close this January, Karla discusses the evolution of South Florida’s drag culture in recent years, the importance of safe performance spaces and what the future may hold for Miami’s drag scene.
