Drag performers fight Florida’s restriction on shows (includes video story)

Drag queens across South Florida are fighting back against recent laws that have forced venues to cancel shows. The restrictions come amid Gov. Ron DeSantis’s push for legislation limiting minors’ access to drag performances, which has politicized drag culture in the state.

In response, drag queens are turning stages into platforms for political expression, organizing rallies and fundraisers to defend LGBTQ+ rights.

Critics argue the bills unfairly target queer culture under the guise of “protecting children,” while supporters of drag see it as an attempt to silence artistic expression and erase LGBTQ issues from public life.

“When someone watches my performances, I want them to have a good time, I want them to live in the moment,” said Drag Queen KRIS LOVE DION. “I don’t want them to worry about anything going on in the real world. It can be very hectic, and I think drag should be an escape for the most part.”
