Easter set to be highest selling holiday this year amid economic uncertainty (includes video story)

Amid nationwide economic uncertainty, this Easter is still projected to be the highest selling holiday of the year.

“Consumers are expecting to really go out for Easter this year,” said Katherine Cullen, the National Retail Federation’s vice president of industry and consumer insight.

The Trump administration’s tariff policy has caused an uproar across the country and globe. With multiple countries retaliating with reciprocal duties, this Easter season is expected to have historically high prices.

However, Americans are not letting the rise in costs affect their traditional gatherings and activities.

“Through all these tumultuous times, consumers have been very protective of these holidays,” said Cullen.

Economists and food scientists agree that the holiday’s economic impact is large.

“Easter is our highest consumption period of the entire year,” said Emily Metz, president and chief executive officer of the American Egg Board. Traditionally calling for a large dinner, egg hunts and decorations — along with a variety of candies — the holiday is often considered a costly weekend.

It’s all about finding a way to make it work for your family, says Cullen, who advised consumers on how to make the most with what they’ve got.

“Certainly think about the decorations you can reuse from last year, whether or not you can encourage people to participate in a potluck.”
