A Florida teenager suffered minor injuries after running a stop sign on an electric scooter and colliding with a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle, authorities said.
The crash occurred when the deputy, who had the right of way, was traveling through an intersection at about 19 mph. According to the sheriff’s office, the teen ignored a stop sign before striking the patrol vehicle. The teen was cited for failing to obey the stop sign and was not wearing a helmet.
Officials said the incident highlights growing concerns about safety as electric scooters and e-bikes become more common on local roads.
Commander Bernie Woodward of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said the teen was fortunate the crash was not more serious.
“That could have ended in quite a tragedy and that’s something he would have to live with forever. Luckily nobody got seriously injured,” Woodward said.
Residents in the area said they frequently see both drivers and riders disregard traffic signs. Deputies are reminding all road users that the same traffic laws apply whether traveling by car, bicycle, scooter or e-bike.Authorities said they hope the incident reminds young riders to follow traffic laws and avoid future injuries.
