“Ellas” exhibition opens in Coral Gables to showcase women in art (includes video story)

“Ellas” is Instituto Cultural de Mexico’s newest exhibition, debuting at the center’s Coral Gables location on Nov. 20. Featuring works by Mexican and Spanish female artists, the show challenges the historical invisibility of women in the arts and will be on display now through Dec. 6.

Opening just days ahead of Miami Art Week, “Ellas” was created by the consulates of Mexico and Spain in honor of International Elimination of Violence Against Women Day (Nov. 25). With only an estimated 14.9% of major museum collections attributed to female artists, the exhibition celebrates their creative achievements while advocating for gender parity.

“I think it’s really important that women have a voice because, as we mentioned today at the opening of this exhibition, it’s kind of difficult for women in the arts to have this visibility,” said Eliel Campuzano, the acting consul of Mexico.
