Cleft lip, a birth defect that affects many newborns, occurs when a baby’s lip does not fully form in the womb. According to Dr. Colin Brady from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, “These conditions develop early in pregnancy, often during the first trimester.”
The risks for the condition are increased by factors like diabetes and family history. Experts recommend reducing the chances of cleft lip with simple steps like taking folic acid before and during pregnancy, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco and alcohol.
“Early detection through advanced technologies like 3D ultrasound can prepare parents and doctors for post-birth challenges.” Brady said.
