FIU kicks off fall 2026 with country-style welcome-back roundup (includes video story)

As the fall 2026 semester entered its second week, Florida International University students and faculty gathered at the Biscayne Bay Campus on Tuesday for a country-style welcome back celebration.

Hosted by the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, the “Welcome Back Roundup” featured free games, food trucks, a cowboy-themed photo booth and organizations from across campus.

“It’s a great opportunity, even for students who aren’t a part of your specific program,” said College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, Dean Brian Schriner, “They can see a little bit of what we offer, and think, ‘Hey, I’d like to get involved in this.’”

Even some of the school’s deans – including Schriner – were in on the fun, competing in the annual Dean’s Challenge.

“The whole purpose of these events is to help students make relationships and get involved,” said FIU President Jeanette Nuñez. “It’s a great start, and we hope it helps students have a great semester.” 

Mathilda Wolfe

Mathilda Wolfe is a returning undergraduate student completing a degree in digital communication & media. Born and raised in South Florida, Mathilda aims to have a career in environmental journalism or wildlife photography.

Frida Flores

Frida Flores is a journalism student at FIU, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication and Media. She focuses on culture, community, social and political topics that help shape public understanding. Through reporting and writing, she aims to bring attention to voices and experiences that tend to go unheard.

Olivier Blanchard

Olivier Blanchard is a Digital Communications major with an interest in media production and studio work. His career goal is to work in a professional studio environment, focusing on content creation, video production, and editing.
