South Florida designers vie for a spot at New York Fashion Week (includes video story)

On Jan. 23, the Fashion Institute of Florida celebrated its fifth graduating class in North Miami. The event featured five designers showcasing a three-piece collection, all vying for a chance to take their talents to New York Fashion Week during September.

For Seraiah Littlejohn and her fellow graduates, this night was a chance to launch their careers on a global stage.

“I’ve always been into fashion, I’ve always loved it,” she said. “I’ve always watched the New York Fashion Week, so it’d be like a super blessing.”

The collections displayed the years of hard work, craftsmanship and diverse creativity of these artists. Former FIF student Phoebe Basulto insists these types of events are essential for the next generation of South Florida designers.

“Having events like this, where we can venture out, promote it and reach other designers in the area, is really grand for students that are at private schools like this,” she said.

After an intense evaluation, judges crowned Arielle Tempelberg as the winner. Her collection, highlighting the beauty of motherhood, earned her the spot at the Big Apple.

“It feels like a dream come true,” said Tempelberg. “I can’t wait to see what I’m going to do.”
