On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration approved an at-home option for the flu vaccine. Experts hope that this decision encourages more people to take steps against influenza.
The FluMist vaccine is a nasal spray for individuals between two to 49 years old. They will have access to the drug through online pharmacies, allowing them to skip a doctor’s visit.
Not everyone is advised to take the FluMist vaccine. Primary care physician Dr. Jesse Bracamonte explains, “There are certain conditions that are not able to take the flu mist, such as if you’re on immune-related medications . . . you’d have to talk to your physician or your clinician to make sure that the vaccine is right for you.”
While patients still need a prescription from a doctor to obtain the vaccine, the spray is a more convenient option for those who skip shots. It will be available for next year’s flu season.
