Florida International University’s men’s basketball team announced Joey Cantens as its new head coach at a press conference held at the Graham Center on March 27.
Cantens is no stranger to the FIU community, having started his collegiate playing career with the Panthers. His return to the program is a strategic move by FIU Athletics to revitalize a team that struggled in Conference USA in recent years.
Cantens expressed excitement about the challenge ahead and mentioned his plan to bring in players who are familiar with his coaching style.
“The goal is always to play in the NCAA tournament and be the best team we can be,” he said. “It’s about building. I’ve flipped rosters and recruited many players at once while maintaining success.”
