Florida International University has parted ways with head football coach Mike MacIntyre after three consecutive 4-8 losing seasons. Athletic Director Scott Carr announced the decision yesterday, expressing gratitude for MacIntyre’s efforts over the past three years. “I want to thank Mike for pouring three years of his heart and soul into the program and for solidifying the foundation,” Carr said.
MacIntyre, a Florida native, was appointed head coach in December 2021. Prior to joining FIU, he served as head coach at San Jose State and Colorado and was the defensive coordinator at Memphis. During his tenure in South Florida, MacIntyre compiled a 12-24 overall record and a 5-18 conference record.
“While we have been more competitive on the field each of the last three seasons, unfortunately our win-loss record is not indicative of those statistical improvements.” Carr said. “Winning championships and bowl games is our goal.”
The timing of MacIntyre’s dismissal presents challenges for the program, particularly with the early signing period for recruits beginning on Wednesday. According to 247 Sports, FIU has 12 players committed for the Class of 2025.
MacIntyre’s departure follows a series of controversies, including allegations of verbal abuse and misconduct. Former team captain Reggie Peterson accused MacIntyre of verbal abuse and throwing a chair that inadvertently hit a player during halftime of a 2022 game against Florida Atlantic University. Additionally, MacIntyre faced criticism for comments about the program from former players.
The university has not yet announced a replacement for MacIntyre, who now has a coaching record of 54-81. For the time being, defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt will handle interim head coach duties. The search for a new head coach is underway as FIU aims to revitalize its football program and improve its standing in Conference USA.
“With that standard in place, a comprehensive national search for a new head coach will begin immediately,” Carr says. “I will have no further comment until that process is completed.”
