A 22-year-old pedestrian is dead after being hit by a private school bus in Sweetwater on Wednesday morning. Miami-Dade police confirm the victim, Anjali Persaud, was a recent graduate of Florida International University who completed her studies this past summer.
It happened around 8:25 a.m. at Southwest Fourth Street and 109th Avenue. Photos taken by an overhead helicopter showed a school bus stopped in the middle of the street with red and yellow sheets extending out to the right side. The street was closed off with police tape.
The privately owned school bus carried middle school students and was traveling north before making a right turn onto Third Street and fatally striking Persaud.
“That school bus made a right turn to travel east and as that bus was passing a collision between the bus and the pedestrian occurred,” said Detective Andre Martin with Miami-Dade Police.
Persaud was immediately taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where she died.
There is no stop sign for northbound traffic. It is unclear whether Persaud was trying to cross the street. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but MDPD reported that the driver was following traffic laws.
