On Wednesday, Florida International University’s Global Forensic and Justice Center partnered with Miami International Airport to conduct security simulations aimed at improving threat detection and emergency response. The demonstrations brought together K-9 units, airport security officials and robotic technology to test coordinated responses in high-risk airport environments. The exercises focused on strengthening public safety and preparing teams for potential security incidents.
The simulations recreated real-world scenarios, including searches of suspicious vehicles and aircraft on the airport’s runway. Explosive detection K-9 teams and robots were deployed separately to inspect for potential threats and evaluate how traditional detection methods compare with emerging technology. The training allows agencies to test response procedures and assess the effectiveness of new security tools.
According to David D’Trinidad, chief of security for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, the technology could strengthen airport operations and improve emergency preparedness.
“At the end of the day, it’s just another layer, another piece of the puzzle to help us mitigate threats,” said D’Trinidad. “And if we can do it more efficiently, that’s definitely a plus for everyone.”
