The Florida International University Panthers defeated Liberty University Flames 34-27 in overtime on Saturday at FIU Pitbull Stadium, snapping a three-game losing streak to the Flames.
It was in the Panthers’ 24th annual Homecoming Game.
Vince Alfonso and Tajah Cherre, both FIU alumni, have attended numerous homecoming games over the years. But they singled out this year’s matchup as their favorite.
“This was hands down the best homecoming game—10 out of 10 for the tailgating, the stadium atmosphere and the high-scoring action on the field,” Alfonso said.
Cherre was about the team’s future. “I have faith as long as they play with pride and finish strong,” HE added.
Liberty struck first, capping its opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass that put the Panthers on their heels. Panthers quarterback Joe Pesansky responded quickly, bulldozing his way into the end zone for a rushing touchdown and signaling the start of what would be a high-scoring shootout.
FIU trailed 21-17 at halftime but came out of the break with renewed energy. The Panthers dominated much of the second half with a balanced attack that kept the Flames’ defense on its heels.
Multiple scoring drives from the offense and a key takeaway from the defense highlighted FIU’s resilience. Still, the Flames mounted a late rally, tying the game with a field goal as time expired in regulation and forcing overtime.
Pesansky delivered on the first possession of overtime, connecting with wide receiver Maguire Anderson in the end zone for what would become the game-winning touchdown. The Panthers’ defense then rose to the occasion, shutting down Liberty’s final drive and ensuring the hard-fought victory remained in Miami. Final score: FIU 34 Liberty 27.
