At Florida International University, students across the globe competed in an annual hackathon, “ShellHacks,” hosted by FIU’s INIT (Innovative, Network, Inspire, Tech) at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. The weekend-long event invited students for opportunities, challenges and job postings from sponsors in the tech field.
With the help of organizers and volunteers, the campus became a place for the participants to develop coding and programming work. Classrooms provide quiet spaces for work or sleeping in while meals are brought in throughout the hours.
“Students come to work on projects they can showcase to the many companies that are sponsoring this event,” said Jose Pujol, a Google sponsor.
ShellHacks runs from Sept. 26 to 28 and winners of a featured challenge take home cash prizes of up to $1,000.
“The whole point here is to get experience, specifically with making projects… to make something in a really quick amount of time,” said one participant, Daniel Jalai.
