FIU students hold vigil honoring Charlie Kirk (includes video story)

About 700 Florida International University students, including members of two conservative groups, gathered last night for a vigil in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. It followed a gathering last week and was a prelude to a formal memorial on Sunday.

The founder of Turning Point USA was killed during a visit to Utah Valley University last week. His death has sparked mourning on campuses and in communities across the nation.

Leaders of FIU’s Turning Point chapter say last night’s gathering was about more than remembering Kirk’s life. They took it as an opportunity for students to come together in solidarity, reflecting the values that Kirk championed during his career.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012. What started as a small campus initiative has grown into an organization with more than 650,000 members across the country. Students say his ability to connect with young people, regardless of their political background, inspired many to join.

In Miami, chapter president Ian Valdes said Kirk’s legacy continues to guide their work. “I just hope to carry out his legacy in general, and promote all the same values,” he said, adding that students feel a responsibility to stand united in the wake of his loss.

His widow, Erika, recently spoke publicly for the first time since his assassination. She thanked supporters and pledged to carry on her husband’s work.

A memorial for Kirk in Arizona will be streamed this Sunday at 11 a.m. inside State Farm Stadium.

Across the country, members of Turning Point USA say their mourning has strengthened their resolve to continue the movement Kirk built.
