For over three decades, Fleet Week has made its home in South Florida, and after a brief stint in Biscayne Bay’s PortMiami last year, the event has returned to its legacy location in Port Everglades.
Fleet Week is a U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships deployed overseas dock in major cities for a week. Sailors then venture into local spots, taking time away from the seas and performing community outreach with an area’s residents.
“It’s an opportunity for the civilian populace in the communities to get a glimpse of the lice of servicemen and women,” said former service recruiter John McCall. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the communities and show them exactly who we are underneath the cloth.”
Fleet Week takes place from April 22 to 30, and over 10,000 people are anticipated to arrive to tour the ported vessels and meet visiting sailors.
