Miami-Dade County’s creative sector is still feeling the strain of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vetoes of arts and culture money in early June. Local arts organizations and employees now face reduced funding, which has led to programming and pay cuts.
“Not only has our pay been reduced,” explains Alex Tarradell, an employee of Miami Lakes’ Main Street Players, “we have to put in the same amount of hours for less pay.”
The arts generated over 31,000 jobs and $2 billion in economic activity last year and are vital to Miami-Dade’s economy. Many argue that DeSantis’ $32 million veto borders on censorship. In response, local organizations are scrambling to secure alternative funding.
