The Florida House celebrates Florida’s 180th statehood anniversary (includes video story)

On Monday, the Florida House in Washington, D.C., celebrated the state’s 180th anniversary by showcasing a series of maps depicting the state’s extensive history.

Reproduced from the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries, ‘Sunshine Stories’ contains maps of buildings and wars from 18th century Spanish rule and British colonization.

“There’s one showing the Spanish galleons traveling all around the state,” said Carol McAuliffe, the exhibit’s curator. “You can really see a lot of real Spanish names in different regions of Florida and kind of how it was the gateway of the Caribbean, especially at that time.”

The exhibit will be available to all visitors at the Florida House until the end of the year.
