About 15 volunteers gathered at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus on Oct. 8 for the school’s tenth annual Sea Level Solutions Day, where they collected flood data in Miami and reported their findings online.
The event aimed to measure water depth and quality during Miami-Dade County king tides, when lunar cycles cause exceptionally high tidal flows. The information will be added to related data FIU has compiled since 2015.
“Well in Florida it’s very common to see those problems on a daily basis,” said volunteer Camilo Olano. “Whenever you see one of those big rain events, you’ll see floods in the streets.”
Other community members joined the effort from four additional distribution sites, including Legion Park, Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, Vizcaya and the Deering Estate.
“We’ve had a great time just participating in this event,” said volunteer Billy Ehrreich. “Having an event where everyone is giving us a feeling of community and really see who’s involved.”
