New Florida state sign includes political undertone (includes video story)

When driving across the border into Florida, observant travelers might notice an added word on the state welcome signs: free.

This branding effort, calling Florida “The Free State,” gained popularity under Governor Ron DeSantis during the COVID-19 lockdowns, signifying a state that had fewer restrictions than many others. However, many opinions controversy among travelers.

DeAira Brown, a resident of Georgia said “I think that’s very interesting. It’s a little concerning, because free from what?”

The political implications of the sign were further emphasized when Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez posted an image of it on social media, complete with a bullseye to highlight the subtle political messaging at play. This act underscores the divide in public opinion, as drivers and residents react to the state’s new greeting.

Liz Dykes, a Florida resident who overheard an interview being conducted on the topic, offered a contrasting viewpoint. “Okay, but we do have a lot of restrictive measures in Florida. Teaching children actual history for instance. Allowing people to express their gender identity. They’re not free to do that.”
