Miami Beach “broke-up” with spring Break in 2023 after two separate shootings left two people dead. Now, college students and tourists are finding new beaches to enjoy their vacation.
“There’s more freedom here, you have a nice beach, the party, I feel more comfortable to be here,” said tourist Marco Kustler, who traveled from Germany to Fort Lauderdale.
He says he didn’t go to Miami Beach, calling it “boring,” because he wanted a lively atmosphere.
In Miami Beach, city leaders have taken steps to limit large crowds through stricter rules, parking restrictions and increased enforcement during peak times. The city is now shifting toward what officials call “wellness-focused tourism,” promoting fitness activities.
“We are definitely not getting back together with the old version of spring break,” said Commissioner Alex Fernandez at a meeting in February. “We just found a new match — more mature, healthier, focused on wellness and enjoying Miami Beach.”
Now, Fort Lauderdale Beach attracts the visitors seeking a high-energy, traditional spring break experience.
“It’s crowded, but people are more just vibing with each other,” said South Florida resident, Zaid Aldunni.
Spring break ends around April 1.
